A3 CBI
A3 Challenge Based Innovation (A3CBI) in partnership with CERN, is a programe in which students are given a chance to develop projects that propose new physical, digital or experiential applications that aim to increase the impact of CERN science. Interdisciplinary teams of product design students and engineering students from diverse fields work together and learn a range of design innovation methods that will aid them in the development of such projects.
This programe is aimed at Masters or final year Bachelor's students.
The teams are not international, however, A3CBI happens in several universities where students share their project development and build on top of each other's ideas.
Challenge brief:
Connect Sustainable Development Goals to CERN technology using a range of design innovation methods to propose new physical, digital or experiential applications that aim to increase the impact of CERN science.
Learning Objectives:
- Apply design research methods to inform creative problem solving aimed at increasing the impact of science or technology-based research.
- Assess the nature of a piece of science or technology and articulate it’s potential characteristics that could benefit or add value to a designed application.
- Contribute to an innovation culture through strategies such as low hierarchy, inclusive decision making, open mind-set and empathetic approaches to collaboration activities.
- Implement a range of innovation methods to explore design ideas aimed to increase the societal and/or commercial value of a specific piece of science or technology.
- Source expertise required to address knowledge gaps in understanding viability, desirability and feasibility of proposed applications for science and technology research.
- Communicate effectively the value of different science and technology research using appropriate visual techniques.
- Present the overall design outcomes aimed to increase the societal and/or commercial value of a specific research and development project related to science and/or technology.
- Define implementation strategies including identifying further research and development required to execute design outcomes developed for science and/or technology research.
Deliverables and Outcomes:
- Progress Video documentation of project.
- Idea development journal, including user testing.
- Final report & prototype demonstrating & justifying designed outcome and implementation plan.
- Showcase final video/presentation.
